Living in KLCC is like being inside your own bubble. Sometimes, you don’t really think of venturing out since everything you need seems to be a stone’s throw away. Great restaurants, malls, supermarkets – everything.

However, after making friends with expats who have been here for a while as well as with locals, I found out that there’s more to Kuala Lumpur and its neighbouring city Petaling Jaya when it comes to shopping and food choices.

In fact, the more you move away from the city centre, the more realise that when it comes to choices, things can get quite overwhelming (and budget friendly too!). That’s why I’m so thankful for my friends’ recommendations! 😉

Situated in a quiet, residential area in Seksyen (Section) 17 of Petaling Jaya is a cafe that serves food that will really make me forget about dieting. Not that I have problems with that. 😉

There’s nothing like comfort food and good coffee on a hot, humid weekend and JEQ in the House was able to provide both while I enjoyed the cafe’s ambiance.

Despite its industrial design, JEQ in the House has a home-y vibe thanks to its vintage decor and wooden elements. It’s a perfect balance of modern and retro, resulting to a laid-back feel. The lush greenery right outside the window that serves as the view doesn’t hurt either. 😉

If the look and feel of this cafe hasn’t convinced you to come over yet, wait till you see the photos of the food.

Here’s what we had that day:

Mushroom Chicken Pot Pie, RM16 (Php195.65, EUR4.04, USD4.40)

Soft and fluffy with the tiniest hint of crisp on the outside, smooth and creamy on the inside. JEQ in the House’s Mushroom Chicken Pot Pie is filled with so much goodness. Chicken, corn, and mushroom blended in a  warm, creamy sauce that’s not too heavy on the tummy which is usually the case for most pot pies. The texture and flavour of the filling makes this dish worthy of a thumbs up!

The JEQ Pizza, RM18 (Php 220.46, EUR4.56, USD4.95)

Who said comfort food has to be heavy? This pizza that comes with a thin crust does not go easy on the cheese and toppings. It’s flavourful but is not too overwhelming as well.

Eggs Benedict, RM18 (Php 220.46, EUR4.56, USD4.95)

Who doesn’t love poached eggs? Sadly, I have yet to do it perfectly at home and while my experiments are ongoing, I have this dish at JEQ in the House to satisfy my craving. Placed on top of a perfectly toasted bread along with spinach and turkey ham, these poached eggs will make you look forward to breakfast – even on an early Monday.

Spicy Crevette Aglio Olio, RM26 (Php318.45, EUR6.59, USD7.14)

My tolerance for spicy food is not that high. While I love a good dose of pepper on my food, chilli is usually something I cannot take. Especially when it comes in mounds and makes a dish way too spicy that you don’t taste any of the flavours your food was cooked with – all because your tongue is busy being burned alive.

I was a bit reluctant to try this at first but being a food reviewer comes with risks and this one was something I had to take. 😉 The great thing about it though is that I ended up loving this dish! The spice is just enough to give your tastebuds a good kick while you relish the flavours brought in by the seafood. I gotta say this is my favourite among everything that was served that day.

Big Breakfast, RM24.90 (Php304.71, EUR6.30, USD6.84)

JEQ in the House, Restaurant, Cafe, Review, Petaling Jaya, Seksyen 17, Restaurant Review, Cafe Review, Food Review, Comfort Food, Pasta, Coffee, Coffee Art, Malaysia

A fluffy omelette, a foot-long sausage, pork and beans, turkey ham, and a mushroom bruschetta. It’s a great meal for a big eater but is also good to share among friends.

Coffee Concoctions (Price varies)

Coffee that’s too cute to drink? Yes, they have it there as well. The coffee barristas at JEQ in the House are attentive to requests. I asked them to surprise me just by giving them my coffee preferences. I told them I usually take my coffee strong, sweet, and ‘pretty’. Lo and behold, this is what I got that day:

The thing with coffee art is that I always feel bad for ruining the design once I take a sip! Oh, and the barrista definitely got the strong and sweet part exactly the way I want it!

The Espresso Bomb (pictured above) is definitely a must-try. Slowly pouring the milk over the coffee ‘bomb’, swirling it with your straw, waiting for bits of espresso and chocolate to crumble and mix into the milk, and slowly sipping the concoction is  creative and blissful process in itself.

And now we move on to desserts – my favourite part of every meal. 😉

Tiramisu Cake, RM16 (Php195.80, EUR4.05, USD4.40)

A modern take on a classic with a crazy cult following. The caramelised almonds make the biggest difference! The creamy-fluffy texture of the cake and the espresso kick also made sure that this Tiramisu Cake will instantly become a favourite. 😉

Macadamia Cheesecake RM14 (Php171.21, EUR3.55, USD3.85)

A dense, ultra-creamy cake which is basically a cheese-lover’s dream come to life. It’s also tangy without going overboard.
